The understanding of materials and of it properties at the nanoscale involves investigations with instrumentation based at large scale infrastructures,along with the instrumentation based at university research laboratory. The PhD school is committed to staying at the forefront of educational and intellectual development. It provides a particularly exciting environment in which to study for a higher degree and to pro mote the research in materials science.

To this aim part of the PhD research activities is devoted to train students to the fundamental of neutron scattering techniques and technologies. The neutron is a powerful tool for the study of condensed matter (solids and liquids) in the world around us, having significant advantages over other forms of radiation in the study of their electronic properties, structural and dynamical at the nanoscale. Students will have the opportunity to perform experiments at leader international neutron facilities.

The University of Rome Tor Vergata is internationally renewed for research in neutron scattering and for the design and construction of neutron instrumentation for short pulse neutron source. Recent examples are the instrument VESUVIO installed at ISIS –for the Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering (DINS) measurements of momentum distribution and mean kinetic energiesin light systems – and the beamlines CHIPIR e IMAT currently under construction at ISIS (UK) for chip irradiation and imaging in materials respectively.

Given the wide number of international collaborations of the Faculty members, it is foreseen that part of the Ph D students reasearch activities will be carried out in foreign Universitiest or research Centers
